Why snacking is causing your gut issues

Have you ever heard of your Migrating Motor Complex (MMC)?

I am assuming no. So let me explain, your MMC is like a cleaning crew for your digestive system. It's a series of muscular contractions that happen when your stomach and small intestine is empty.

The MMC only works when the digestive tract is empty, so no food! So as you can see, frequent snacking disrupts the MMC by constantly introducing food into the digestive tract and not allowing ample time for the MMC to do its job. The MMC requires at least 3-4 hours to do its job, so snacking in between meals is a big NO.

Disruption of the MMC process can lead to symptoms like bloating, and discomfort because now there is food that has been left to sit and ferment in the digestive tract as the MMC was interrupted.

So, your take home advice is, focus on bigger meals rather than snacking, and allow a minimum of 3-4 hours between meals so the MMC can do its job!
